Authorities in New Zealand say at least six people were killed in an overnight fire at a hostel in the capital Wellington.
According to a statement from Fire and Emergency New Zealand, fire crews were called to the Loafers Lodge Inn in the city center shortly after midnight local time.
As firefighters battled the blaze, 52 people were evacuated, but it was unclear how many people were inside at the time. As of late Monday, urban search and rescue team members were still determining whether the building was safe to search.
It is unclear what caused the fire.

Thala Chili stayed at the hostel. CNN affiliate told Radio NZ The experience was “really scary.”
He said he saw smoke coming from under his door on the top floor of the inn and jumped two floors onto the roof of a nearby building, where he was rescued by paramedics and treated for a sprained ankle.
A local politician Paul Eagle told RNZ The unstable nature of many of the building’s occupants made it difficult for authorities to determine who was inside the building when the fire broke out.
“It’s not uncommon for them not to know who exactly is there at the time because people can come and go all the time,” Rongotai MP told RNZ. “It’s a simple place, a roof over their heads, a simple place to stay.”
