Google said it has developed a new general-purpose large language model called PalM 2 that can generate a variety of human-like text in response to human input. CNBC reported Monday that Google plans to announce the Palm 2 during its I/O conference this week.
This model is skilled in mathematics, software development, language translation reasoning, and natural language generation. “It’s better than our previous state-of-the-art language models,” Zoubin Ghahramani, vice president of Google DeepMind, told reporters earlier this week. Google announced Lambda 2021 model and more powerful Paul M Model in 2022.
The PalM 2 uses Google’s custom artificial intelligence chips and is more efficient to operate than previous models, Ghahramani said. The new model can work with more than 20 programming languages ββand more than 100 spoken languages, including the long-standing FORTRAN, Kahramani said.
About 20 Google products now use PalM 2, and a lightweight version could run on a mobile device, he said.
Kahramani declined to specify the exact sources used to train the PALM or the number of parameters the model uses. OpenAI has taken a similar approach to disclosure with its GPT-4 model. βJordan Novett

Immersive View gives Maps users a way to see their chosen route with AI-driven information.
The new AI-powered function will pull in air quality information, weather, and Google Maps will display the chosen route for users. CEO Sundar Pichai showcased the Manhattan Bike Route, which visualized a bike ride along the West Side Expressway, with traffic, weather and AI-powered rendering of the route.
The demo suggested the flyover functionality and the feature would be helpful for superimposed navigation in the user interface. Pichai said the operation will expand to a dozen major cities in the coming months.

Google uses AI to compose emails within Gmail
Google’s first big feature announcement could make writing emails a lot easier β or flooding your inbox with low-quality computer-generated messages.
Google will integrate generative AI with Gmail to help it quickly flesh out so-called “Help Me Write” emails. Google’s example is filling out a full refund letter from an airline. Google has settings to make the generated text longer or shorter, and it uses the context of previous messages to help write the copy.
“Type in what you want, hit generate, and the full draft will appear,” Pichai said. – How Leswing

Google opens with music created partly with AI
Ahead of Google I/O, attendees are treated to a free concert from indie electronic artist Dan Deacon.
Deacon’s song, “When I’m Dying,” was created in part by Google’s generative AI tools, he said. The background was made by an image generator reacting to the lyrics of the song.
“I’m going to be playing some songs, and there’s a lot of content to be created using Fenaki, Bard and MusicLM,” said Deegan. – How Leswing

This year, many of Google’s announcements are expected to focus on artificial intelligence. AI has become a hot topic in the tech industry, thanks to the attention of OpenAI and rival Microsoft, which have integrated so-called “big language models” into the search engine.
But Google is heavily involved in developing these technologies, particularly in the architecture of the transformers used by ChatGPT and other competitors. It has its own chatbot, Bart, which is currently limited to select beta testers. It is one of the strongest AI departments, recently reorganized as Google DeepMind. — as Leswing
