Don’t let a hidden speed-camera car catch you off-guard—learn to spot them in three easy steps. Sharpen your awareness and save yourself from unexpected fines.

What Is a Speed-Camera Car?

A speed-camera car, or mobile radar unit, is an unmarked vehicle fitted with automated speed-detection gear. Unlike fixed radars, these stealth cars blend into traffic and can record violations without a visible flash. Staffed by law-enforcement agencies or authorized private operators, they target drivers exceeding limits by more than 10 km/h on slower roads or 10% on faster ones.

1. Recognize Common Models

These radar cars aren’t exotic—think everyday sedans and station wagons. Familiarize yourself with the nine most-used models to heighten your alertness:

  • Ford Mondeo
  • Citroën Berlingo
  • Peugeot 508 and 308
  • Seat Leon
  • Skoda Octavia
  • Volkswagen Passat 7 & 8
  • Volkswagen Golf

Most run on diesel engines to power their radar equipment, so spotting a diesel of these types can be a clue—though not every such car is a radar.

2. Inspect the License Plate

A telltale giveaway lies in the number plate. Radar cars sport reflective plastic mounts and use a distinct font that differs from standard plates. You might also glimpse a retractable housing concealing an infrared flash. When you see a plate that looks “off,” it’s time to double-check your speed.

3. Spot the Cameras

Radar vehicles carry multiple cameras: a black radar box on the dashboard up front and two small lenses set into a black square on the rear window—visible if the glass isn’t tinted. At night, their faint LED glow can give them away. Keep an eye on the car ahead: if it ticks all three boxes, be ready to ease off the accelerator.

By learning these three cues, you’ll drive more confidently and avoid surprises—while still keeping within the speed limit for everyone’s safety.
