Vinícius Júnior and Sergio Ramos are two Real Madrid stars who the Spanish team was thankful to have on Wednesday.
The duo helped engineer a 3-0 victory over Leganes in Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Júnior and Ramos helped their team pull through following the break, offsetting the unconvincing initial stages of the game.
Last season, Leganes eliminated Real Madrid during the quarterfinals of the competition. This time, the Spanish team was able to bag a first-leg triumph at their home stadium.
During the first leg of the Copa del Rey round-of-16, Ramos, Madrid’s center-back, was able to strike from the position, giving Real Madrid a 1-0 advantage.
That score took Ramos to 80 goals for Los Blancos. This makes him their 17th top scorer of all time.
Moreover, the Spanish football star also possesses 17 for the national team of Spain and three for Sevilla.
Wednesday’s match marks a milestone for Ramos who scored the 100th goal of his football career.
The 32-year-old Spaniard gave Real Madrid the advantage shortly before half-time with a penalty.
This makes the Spanish team’s tally to three figures following Leganes midfielder Gerard Gumbau clumsily fouling Real Madrid right back, Alvaro Odriozola.
With a small number of spectators, Ramos prevented Leganes from getting better chances to score by breaking the deadlock through conversion of a 44th-minute penalty awarded after Odriozola was brought down in the field.
Meanwhile, as per Júnior’s significant contribution, he gave a stunning volley that placed his team in a secure spot in advance of the second leg.
With 13 minutes remaining, the Real Madrid forward completed the scoring, putting his team on the brink of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
The 18-year-old Brazilian, who was signed by Santiago Solari’s team last summer, electrified the match.
He smoothly concluded an Odriozola cross to goal for his second successive participation in the Copa del Rey.
His amazing volley was his third goal for the football club and marked as the team’s third of the evening.
Júnior’s back-pedaling involved adjusting his feet before making an acrobatic movement. This enabled the football to soar into the left-hand corner.
Júnior and Ramos are the footballers to look out for as Real Madrid clashes against Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarin in Sevilla, Spain on Sunday.
Then, the team will progress to the second match against Leganes on January 16.
