BARCELONA, SPAIN – Recent sports articles about the transfer of Neymar da Silva Santos Jr., also known as Neymar, to play for another team has shocked the world mainly because of the transfer payment offered to the renowned player. Neymar was lured to play for the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) football club and was offered a record-breaking US$ 222 million to transfer from FC Barcelona (aka Barca).
The Brazilian superstar started playing for the Barca at the age of 18. Neymar also plays as forward for the Brazil national team and has been the key to many of the team’s victories. He led the team to win its 1st Olympic gold medal last summer of 2016. Neymar is hailed as the 4th highest scorer in the national team with over 52 goals made in 77 of his matches.
On August 3, 2017, a deal has been signed to release him to PSG even if he’s still under a contract to play for Barca. The offer, which is worth more than US$ 200 million, catapulted Neymar as the world’s most expensive sportsman in football history. The deal was worth more than twice the amount brokered for the previous record holder, Paul Pogba, who was traded for US$ 104 million in 2016. Neymar is expected to play for PSG until 2022.
Losing a key person in their team, Barca is now looking at young talents that will take Neymar’s place and the top candidate is Ousmane Dembele. Dembele currently plays as a right winger for Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year old player now holds the eyes of fans and team owners after he scored 10 goals and provided 21 excellent assists in his first few matches playing for Dortmund.
Barca has lodged a bid to acquire him for US$ 82 million together with other signing bonuses. However, some sports articles say Dortmund may give him for at least US$ 100 million. This may not be a problem for Barca since they have the money to burn for an immediate replacement in the post left by Neymar.
