PHILADELPHIA – Over 150 players are competing for the chance to become part of 20 soccer players who will represent the country in the upcoming Jewish Olympics this summer.
The World Maccabiah Games, also known as the Jewish Olympics, is a prestigious event that is held every four years with different sports categories. This sports event is composed of nine thousand athletes that come from different parts of the world.
Maccabi USA has an estimated 1,100 athletes that they can bring to Israel and compete for the country. John Deck was one of the candidates to be part of Maccabi USA, and his spot was confirmed during the draft soccer playoffs for the male category.
Deck is a high school student and soccer player at Fairfield Warde High School. He does not only represent his school, but he represents the whole Fairfield town in Connecticut. He said in an interview that all his sweat and struggles paid off when he took a place on the soccer roster of team USA.
He mentioned that his passion in playing soccer all started when he was a toddler who kicked a size one ball inside their family room. By the age of three, he joined his first recreational team which helped him develop his stamina and skills.
Deck is also a member of the National Honor Society where he proved that being an athlete does not mean losing your focus on academics. In fact, he has a high-level of academic achievements over the past years. He also mentioned that his Revolution Coach Floyd Neil encouraged him to succeed in both fields.
“Never give up on and off the soccer field” is not the exact phrase but the message itself is what Deck keeps in his heart wherever he goes. Deck is a forward and a midfielder in his team which proves that he has fast feet.
He finished by saying that he could never get where he is now without the support of his family, teammates, and coach. He is closer to his dream as the World Maccabi Games is about to come this summer and he wishes that he can make America proud.
