The player best known for an impressive goal during a FIFA World Cup in 1970 against Italy (4-1 final score) passed away.
He was a member of the legendary World Cup squad – along with Pele, revered as possibly the world’s most renown soccer player of all time. The team also featured other greats such as Pepe, and Gilmar.
It was a team comparable to America’s Olympic NBA dream team of 1992 which featured Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson, among others.
Alberto was team captain of the legendary 1970 team. He scored eight goals for the Brazil national team throughout his career.

Alberto spent his life playing and coaching soccer all over the world. He is remembered most in the league for outstanding defense, but it was his intuitiveness for the game that attracted greatest attention.
He was inducted into the Football Museum Hall of Fame and in January 2013 was named a FIFA World Cup Embassador.

He was born in Rio de Janeiro. He died of a sudden heart attack which was announced on the website of the Brazilian Football Federation.
Many, including Pele, turned to social media to mourn his death.

The soccer club Santos announced a three day mourning period in his honor. The wake will be held at the CBF building in Barra da Tijuca.
