Alberto Carlos: Soccer Superstar dies at age 72

 

October 25, 2016, Carlos Alberto, Brazilian soccer hero died at age 72.

The player best known for an impressive goal during a FIFA World Cup in 1970 against Italy (4-1 final score) passed away.

He was a member of the legendary World Cup squad – along with Pele, revered as possibly the world’s most renown soccer player of all time. The team also featured other greats such as Pepe, and Gilmar.

It was a team comparable to America’s Olympic NBA dream team of 1992 which featured Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson, among others.

Alberto was team captain of the legendary 1970 team. He scored eight goals for the Brazil national team throughout his career.

“Brazilian sports journalist Emerson Vicente told CNN,”Carlos Alberto is an icon of world football,”.

Alberto spent his life playing and coaching soccer all over the world. He is remembered most in the league for outstanding defense, but it was his intuitiveness for the game that attracted greatest attention.

He was inducted into the Football Museum Hall of Fame and in January 2013 was named a FIFA World Cup Embassador.

Remembered by many.

He was born in Rio de Janeiro. He died of a sudden heart attack which was announced on the website of the Brazilian Football Federation.

Many, including Pele, turned to social media to mourn his death.

Pele wrote,

I am deeply saddened by the death of my friend and brother @capita70. Dear God, please take care of our ‘Capitao’. Rest In Peace”.

Beckenbauer wrote,

Heidi and me are deeply shocked. Carlos Alberto was like a brother to me, one of my best friends,”

A message posted on Alberto’s official Facebook page read: “With great regret we inform you that, on the morning of this Tuesday, our eternal captain, Carlos Alberto Torres, passed away.”

The soccer club Santos announced a three day mourning period in his honor. The wake will be held at the CBF building in Barra da Tijuca.
