Mercedes have announced that Ferrari’s Formula 1 ex-Chief Engineer James Allison will join the Silver Arrows, beginning from the March. Allison will work as the newly created role of technical director and will captain Mercedes’ technical department. The move was made as the world champions saw Paddy Lowe leave them for Williams last month.

Allison left Ferrari in July 2016, which was his second term with Ferrari after joining in the middle of the 2013 season helping the Italian giants to recover from a winless 2014 season to bag three victories last year. Previously he worked for the team under Ross Brawn between 2000 and 2005.

The British engineer also went on to work with Renault team, where he was deputy technical director guiding Fernando Alonso to win consecutive world championships in 2005 and 2006.

Allison said that he is very excited to be getting back to work after this time away from the sport.

He admitted that it’s a massive privilege to be given the trust of a position in a team [Mercedes] that has done so spectacularly well in the past three seasons. He is really looking forward to playing his part in helping Mercedes go from strength to strength in the coming seasons.

Allison will report directly to the executive director of Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team Toto Wolff.

Wolff said that he is delighted to welcome James to Mercedes and is very much looking forward to working with him.

Speaking about Mercedes’ technical team, Wolff stated that it is extremely skilled at every level and at the top of its game after producing three world championships in a concession.

However, he admitted that it wasn’t an easy task to find the right personality who can strengthen Mercedes’ experienced group of engineers and give their talented young team members the space to develop and also bring his own vision to this role.

He concluded by saying that James is a sharp engineer; He thinks they have found the perfect guy and the right fit with their senior leaders.
