LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Jessie Vargas revealed his thoughts on social media about his reason for turning down a fight with Miguel Cotto.
The former holder of WBO welterweight champion title posted statements in his Twitter and Instagram that he was not given a good offer by Golden Boy Promotions. He is the 3rd to publicly admit that he turned down a fight with Cotto due to the low offer Golden Boy Promotions placed on the table. The other two were the WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia and the IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.
Garcia and Spence, are both unwilling to sign a long-term contract with Oscar Dela Hoya’s promotional company, which comes with the offer of the Cotto fight.
Vargas didn’t note if he was offered a contract with Golden Boy Promotions, but he is also a free agent. He came to an undisclosed financial agreement to terminate his contract with his longtime promoter – Top Rank Inc. He is currently working with adviser Al Haymon.
Cotto (41-5, 33 KOs) will fight against welterweight contender Sadam Ali (25-1, 14 KOs), who will be moving to 154 lbs. from 147. The match is a fight for the WBO super welterweight title held by Cotto. It was announced that this fight will be the last fight of Cotto.
Vargas stopped Ali in the ninth round of their fight last March, who then took the vacant WBO welterweight championship in Washington, D.C.
Vargas expressed interest in fighting Cotto when he learned of the offer. He posted this on his social media account on Wednesday. The reason he declined the offer was due to it being not sufficient for a fight of such degree. He also noted that He was able to take down Ali in the ninth round of their fight at 147 lbs.
