Team USA and Team Canada will clash on for the gold medal game today at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The game is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The two powerhouse teams entered the championship game after each team won a dramatic semi-final. The American team took out the Russian team, while Team Canada overcame two early shortfalls in a 5-2 victory over Sweden.
The Canadian team found itself trailing twice to Sweden in the semifinal match, down 1-0 and 2-1 before scoring four more goals to earn an astonishing victory.
As the drama was out of the way early for the Canadians, the American team needed a spectacular finish to knock off the Russian team. Moreover, the organizers likely see the final as a dream gold medal game for the North American people. It seemed to many that the Russian team had booked a victory after taking the lead through three rounds of the shootout. However, the rules for the Under-20 tournament demand that shootouts go five rounds.
The American team was able to turn around the score before cementing the win in the seventh round on a shot by Troy Terry. Also, Terry scored three times on goalie Ilya Samsonov in the shootout.
Terry, a 19-year-old Anaheim Ducks candidate, told ESPN that “I’m just trying to gather my words here. I’m still shaken a little bit. He’s such a big goalie (Samsonov). I felt the best way to score on him was going five-hole as the second and third time, I was just trying to figure it out as I went down”.
The Final will be aired on both the NHL Network and TSN, and also available live online.
It was a great game from russia with the first goal scored in just 8 mins into the game. However, the Americans gave it all to book the final.
