OKC Thunder’s Russell Westbrook Bags MVP Award

New York City, New York – Russell Westbrook has won this year’s Most Valuable Player trophy given at the first NBA Awards 2017 held tonight.

The show was held at the Basketball City at Pier 36. The hosts were singer-songwriter Drake, Ernie Johnson, Jr., Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley. There were 12 awards given based on the team and player’s annual scorecards. NBA also gave 2 honorary team awards and 7 online fan poll awards.

Russell Westbrook defeated fellow finalists James Harden of Houston Rockets and Kawhi Leonard from San Antonio Spurs. He garnered 888 votes against Harden’s 753 and Leonard’s 500. Cleveland Cavalier’s LeBron James got 333 which put him in 4th place, while Isaiah Thomas from Boston Celtics sat in the 5th place with 81 points.

Bearing Jersey number 0, Westbrook is the point guard of Oklahoma City Thunder since he signed with the team on July 15, 2008. He, along with Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan, completes the triad of players who scores more than 40 points in an All-Star Competition. Last year, he set his 7th triple-double streak with their game against the Rockets.

Aside from the MVP award, Russell Westbrook also got the Best Style Fan Award and the Game Winner of the Year Fan Award. These were based on the online votes from NBA.com and other social media.

Some prominent winners who won more than 1 trophy include Draymond Green (All-NBA Team, All-Defensive Team, Defensive Player of the Year, and Assist of the Year Fan Award), Stephen Curry (Assist of the Year Fan Award, All-NBA Team, Kevin Durant (All-NBA Team, Best Play off Moment Fan Award), and Kawhi Leonard (All-NBA Team, All-Defensive Team, Block of the Year Fan Award).

The inaugural award-giving body was broadcasted live on TNT, produced by Dick Clark Productions.
