The Tigers will send Jordan Zimmermann (5-7, 5.87 ERA) to take the pitch in the series opener against the Royals on Monday night.
After posting four straight quality starts, Zimmermann gave up 14 runs in 12 2/3 innings (10.33 ERA) in his last three starts.
The Royals continued their bad form in the second half of the season, losing first two games of three game series against the Rangers. However, they won the series finale 3-4 on Sunday.
Left-hander Jason Vargas (12-3, 2.62 ERA) makes the start on Monday against the Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. In his last start before the all-star break, Vargas gave up a season-high three home runs and tied a season-high six runs.
Vargas holds a record of 3-4 with a 5.37 ERA over his 10 career starts against the Tigers.
