Royals are coming off a 4-8 loss to Minnesota Twins, losing two of the three games of the series.

Royals will send left-hander Jason Vargas to make the start in the opener of four-game road series against the Yankees on Monday. Vargas will enter the game in hope for his first career victory against the Yanks. He allowed a season-high six runs over four frames in a loss to the Yanks on 19 May.

In 10 appearances which saw nine starts, Varga is going 0-6 with a 7.15 ERA, 33 strikeouts and 13 walks over 45 1/3 innings.

Yankees broke their three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Rays on Sunday at Tropicana Field.

Right-hander Michael Pineda (4-2, 3.42 ERA) takes the pitch against the Royals in Monday’s series opener at Yankee Stadium. In his last outing against Kansas City, Pineda allowed four runs three and earned on six hits over six innings. The Yanks hold a 6-2 win-loss record in Pineda’s past eight starts.

In his nine career starts against the Royals, Pineda went 4-5 with a 3.95 ERA, making 51 strikeouts compared to just 12 walks in 57 innings.
