At a heavyweight press conference at the O2 Arena in London, Triple H announced the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament.
18 Fighters will battle it out for this new belt in a two-day event at Blackpool’s Empress Ballroom. The last man standing at the end of the tournament will be crowned champion. The event will take place on January 14 and 15, 2017.
As part of the announcement, WWE is bringing in British wrestling legend Nigel McGuinness as a co-host for the show alongside Raw‘s lead commentator Michael Cole.
WWE Executive Vice President of Talent Triple H said that passionate U.K. fans deserve to have their own Champion. This tournament is the next step in our ongoing strategy to create localized content for our global WWE Network. Furthermore, to develop another brand that pulls in our passionate fans, and add a new dimension to our on-going storylines.
Former WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor noted that the goal of the event is to “bridge the gap between the independent wrestling scene and the WWE.” Moreover, which is something WWE has already begun to do with the Cruiserweight Classic. Furthermore, they will conduct general women’s tournament in early next year.
Adding this UK-based tournament is the latest outrageous development in WWE’s quest to conquer the wrestling world.
With NXT roping in top independent talents like Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode and Austin Aries,in the meantime Cruiserweight division now boasting biggies like Brian Kendrick, Rich Swann, and TJ Perkins, WWE will be loading up its roster with a wide array of talent that will, ideally, bring in new viewers to the WWE Network.
