New York City, New York – Michael Nyqvist, one of the original cast members of the movie “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”, ended his lung cancer battle in Stockholm, Sweden.
His family confirmed the sad news in a statement released Tuesday night. He was 56 years old.
According to his autobiography, his childhood was spent looking for his real parents. A Swedish couple adopted him in an orphanage where his Swedish mother and Italian father left him.
Michael Nyqvist became a popular household name with his portrayal as the lead villain for John Wick and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. He started as an actor when he was still in his hometown and pursued his passion when he became an exchange student at 17 in Omaha, Nebraska.
He got his biggest break on his movie “Together” in 2000 where he got his first best actor nomination in Guldbagge. He had just recently received a Best Male Supporting Actor award in Guldbagge. He made over 60 movies during his career, from 1987 to 2017.
His first Oscars nomination was for the movie “As It Is In Heaven” in 2004. In this movie, he played as a successful orchestra conductor who had a heart attack and found his way to create music that will open other people’s heart.
He is best known for his character in the Millennium Series: “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest.” Niels Arden Oplev, the director of the movie series, believed that Nyqvist was the perfect fit for the role.
Fellow actors have paid their tribute to the seasoned actor, including Gerard Butler. He described Nyqvist as his favorite. They became friends because of the movie “Hunter Killer”, where the two shared playful bonding moments.
Michael Nyqvist has left behind his wife Catharina Ehrnrooth and children, Ellen and Arthur.
