Fifth-seeded, Friars pulled off a thriller 75-72 overtime victory over No. 1 seed Xavier in the semifinal Friday night. All thanks to Alpha Diallo who scored the game-winning two points with less than 3 minutes left in overtime. Diallo along with lead scorer Rodney Bullock each added 17 points in the win while Cartwright added crucial 15 points. Clearly, the team is pumped up as they fought a 17-point second-half deficit to seize the win. Moreover, it is the first time in Friars’ history that they have defeated 3 top 5 teams in a single season. So expect fireworks when try to take down the title from Villanova on Saturday night.
This will be the third time Providence going for the championship clash. It won the 1994 and 2014 editions of the contest.
The defending champions Villanova Wildcats booked their fourth consecutive trip to the Big East Tournament championship game after thrashing Butler Bulldogs 87-68 Friday night. Mikal Bridges led the team with 18 points and four rebounds while Big East player of the year Jalen Brunson added 17 points and freshman Omari Spellman notched 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Holding on to their 5-year long dominance in the college basket, the Wildcats have won six of last seven games and will look forward to winning the championship. However, Saturday’ clash against the Friars may not be a cakewalk. In the two encounters this season against them, the Wildcats split a win but has lost the last match at Providence 76-71.
