Saturday’s matchup will be the 51st meeting between the two schools with Northern Iowa owning a 26-24 series advantage. In the last encounter, North Dakota State posted a 24-20 in 2016.
The Panthers improved to 4-3, 3-1 MVFC in the season after the Panther defense recorded 10 sacks for downing another top-10 opponent No. 9 Youngstown State, 19-14 last Saturday. Junior Rickey Neal had a career-high 3.5 sacks while Keelon Brookins and Hezekiah Applegate added 2.0 each. Junior Marcus Weymiller his second straight over 100 yards rushing ( 133 ) on the ground and 2 touchdowns for the win.
Going into Saturday’s big clash against the Bisons, the Panthers’ strength lies in their handling of the red zone as they are scoring on 22 out of 24 attempts, which ranks 10th in the FCS in red zone offense.
One of three teams that remain undefeated, NDSU shot to a 7-0 (4-0 mark in the MVFC) in the season with a 24-12 home win last week against the Western Illinois. They allowed zero offensive touchdowns and held Illinois to just 216 yards of total offense. James Hendricks, Caleb Butler, and Robbie Grimsley led the defense with each making five tackles, resulting in totaled five sacks, seven tackles for loss, and four pass breakups.
Bison proved that they hold a solid defense and a team which is consistently performing well. They are the top defense in the FCS, allowing only 192.7 yards per game. The Bison have only allowed two passing touchdowns through the seven games in the season.
