The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are 1-4 into the 2017-18 college football season. On the other hand, the Illinois Fighting Illini, fighting this game at home, are in a better position: 2-3. Rutgers and Illinois are both at the bottom of their own divisions (Big Ten East and Big Ten West, respectively). Winning this match is their attempt to not being the worst in their division.

The Rutgers vs Illinois game is really a game that needs no special preview. It’s just a match between two of the lowest ranking teams trying to move forward. None of the teams are competitive. Further, they are marred by bad decisions. The play styles of both teams are poor.

Rutgers Team News

Rutgers Scarlet Knights’ loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes was a painful one. 56-0. It must have taken them a while before they were even able to think football once more. Last year was horrible as well.

Although it’s true that the team is desperate for a good win, we should know that it’s a very new team we are talking about. The offense is bad and defense needs improvement. Let’s see what can they pull off against the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Illinois Team News

The Illinois offense is somewhat better than before. At least, sometimes. Currently, the team needs lots of practice and experience to be able to compete with strong teams. However, Rutgers Scarlet Knights are not a strong team by a long shot. Therefore, their improved offense might be the key to win this game.

If they keep up their rushing and passing game then we can be sure that they will excel, at least in the first half, like the game against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

As for bigger challenges and overall team news, Illinois is the youngest team and starting many freshmen. We need to respect that. It will be a few years until the Fighting Illini are ready to take on bigger challenges.
