The Spartans struggled in the 2016 season, finishing the year with a 4-8 record overall and a 3-5 mark in the Mountain West. As a result,  head coach Ron Carragher was out.

The Spartans will be playing their first game under new coach Brent Brennan when they welcome the Bulls on Saturday. Brennan has stated that he won’t announce his starter until game time. The top two contenders for the quarterback position are Josh Love and Montel Aaron.
